The scrutiny that Miley Cyrus has recently received – from the content of her music to the wardrobe – has led some to question if female stars are held to MUCH higher standard than that of their male counterparts.
Case in point: Miley Cyrus goes sexy, and parents of the world freak out. Twilight star Taylor Lautner goes shirtless, and the hearts of tweens and Twi-moms are all aflutter. Both teenagers are using their assets to promote their careers, yet one is bashed for their appearance and another is not.
Some call this “double standard” simply unacceptable and regardless of whether it’s imposed by the general public, the media, or the marketing wizards – has to stop.
Yet for others, the uncomfortable fact remains that Miley, at 17, is underage, while Taylor Lautner who also uses his image as a selling point, is only slightly a year old but still 18 (the official age in which one becomes an adult).
It’s little secret that the sweet and innocent Hannah Montana starlet is quickly transforming into a much older, much more provocative Miley Ray Cyrus who so desires to be treated as a mature adult. But does her recent dress suggest maturity?
Miley is getting all sorts of flak for her shrinking wardrobe, but when was the last time you saw a picture of Taylor Lautner with his shirt on?
Hence, one must conclude that it is perfectly acceptable for a young man to show some skin in order to sell his product, yet when it comes to a young woman, the story may be a little different.
