OneRepublic decides to host a YouTube cover contest for their hit song, “Apologize”…and the rest, is what they call history.
Tamar Kaprelian, then 21 years of age, amazed the band with her terrific delivery and singing voice and was named the contest winner. Shortly thereafter, she signed with Interscope and began working on her debut record.
The album, Sinner or a Saint, hit retailers today.
Prior to the celebration of the debut album, TeenChive was able to catch up with Tamar yesterday and chat about what we think is going to be a major hit.
Tamar, who grew up listening to Billy Joel, Carole King and Paul McCartney told us “there was something incredible about the songwriters and the singers of the 70s and that era.”
“They really took the time to hone and perfect their craft,” she added. ”And that’s something that is very, very important to me. It’s something I take a lot of great pride in doing.”
Indeed, amazing songwriting is something that is very evident throughout the duration of Sinner or a Saint. Tamar, who also self-describes the record as “very classy,” with an overall theme centered on hope, continued, “It’s a record that I feel like you can listen beginning to end and every song kind of flows into the next song beautifully”
“It’s a piece of work I’m very proud of and I think the message is really great and hopefully people will connect with it and make them feel good.”
Sure, pleasant melodies, catchy hooks and soulful lyrics may make you feel great now, however it was not always that uplifting for the young singer. Tamar, who was originally signed to another major label at age 18, never saw her debut album come to fruition and would have to wait nearly six years later for her debut.
While this may have demoralized a lot of young stars, Tamar found solace in the dark days and once again turned to writing music. In fact, her first single off the record, “New Day,” is exactly about finding hope in difficult circumstances and was recently played in the finale of The Hills when Lauren says goodbye.
“‘New Day’ is about going through some difficult situations in life and becoming a stronger person out of that,” she said. ”And I feel like that is something everyone can relate to at certain points in their life and you know…it’s a song that really set off the entire writing process for this record.”
Tamar cites “Raining in Paradise” and “Sinner or a Saint” as two of her favorite songs on the album. When asked if the long wait to finally see her debut album become a reality consequently made Sinner or a Saint more mature and better, Tamar enthusiastically remarked, “Oh, most definitely!”
“I really strongly believe in this and I feel like in life, in general, people come in and out of your life for a purpose. They are there to teach you something. You go through different experiences in your life and it’s to learn lessons. You know, back when I was with a different label and signed somewhere else and it didn’t work out, looking back at that now…I would not be the songwriter or the artist that I am now had it not been a more dramatic experience.”
“This record would have not sounded the same. Without question, this record chronicles the past six to seven years I’ve been doing this and each experience has most definitely defined me in a way.”
