If you think illegal movie downloading is harmless you might want to think again.
A teen in New Mexico has been fined $2,900 for illegally downloading last year’s Oscar winning “Best Picture” Hurt Locker.
Skyler Atterbom said that a lot of his friends downloaded content and did not feel like its a big deal. He estimated, “I would say at least 95 percent of the teenagers I know at my school, my friends, do this daily.”
Authorities reportedly traced the IP address of the download back to Skyler’s father and offered him until March 11 to agree to a $2900 settlement.
Skyler added, “Ever since this came about, I keep thinking to myself, ‘Why didn’t I just go to a Redbox and rent the movie, legally, for, you know, a dollar?’”
