A teen girl from Cedar Falls High School made national headlines earlier this week when she became the first female to win a match in an Iowa State High School Wrestling Tournament.
The story caused quite the stir because Cassy Herkelman technically won by default since her opponent, a sophomore named Joel Northrup, opted to forfeit.
Northrup said that he respected Cassy’s accomplishments but did not believe that girls and boys should compete against each other in the same sport.
“Wrestling is a combat sport and it can get violent at times,” Joel said. “As a matter of conscience and my faith I do not believe that it is appropriate for a boy to engage a girl in this manner. It is unfortunate that I have been placed in a situation not seen in most other high school sports in Iowa.”
Cassy advanced to the Class 3A state quarterfinals but lost to another male wrestler.
How do you personally feel about this story? Should girls and boys compete against each other in a “contact” sport like wrestling or was Joel Northrup in the right?
