Traditionally, if you are hated early by the critics - the movie will also do poor financially. However, The Hollywood Reporter notes that ”with a base of support among the topliner’s tween female fans, ‘Song’ always figured to be front-loaded in its five-day opening run. But its first-day tally was better than anticipated, suggesting cumulative box office of $20 million or more through Sunday.”
A Disney rep added: “The whole idea of opening on a Wednesday was to try to set ourselves apart from the competition. There are a lot of big pictures out there, and the only way to get noticed is to get out there and strut your stuff.”
Easter weekend will only help the numbers for The Last Song at the box office, all in all, making the movie a hit at least financially.
